Dorm Prefect — Salisbury School
Being a Dorm Prefect at Salisbury School is both an honor and a responsibility. Prefects play a major role in shaping the dorm environment by helping create a place that feels safe, respectful, and supportive. At Salisbury, this position isn’t just about following rules — it’s about being someone others can count on, someone who represents the community’s values, and someone who leads through actions every day.
I became a prefect through a process that involved both student voting and dorm parent selection. Students in the dorm voted for the people they felt were responsible and trustworthy, and then dorm parents reviewed applications that asked why we wanted the role and what qualities we could bring to it, so being selected meant a lot to me. It showed that both my peers and the dorm parents trusted me to help guide our community of students.

In my role, I help make sure nightly check-in runs smoothly. On one night when a dorm parent wasn’t on campus, my fellow prefects and I were asked to run the entire check-in ourselves. Moments like that taught me to stay calm, organized, and dependable even when things change quickly.
I also help keep the dorm clean and orderly. If I see a messy hallway or a room that needs attention, I talk to the student respectfully and make sure it gets fixed. One example of this was when I noticed a student’s room was extremely messy to the point where it could have caused safety issues. I talked with them about it, explained why it mattered, and we ended up cleaning it together. Small interactions like this help keep the dorm safe and comfortable for everyone.
Being a prefect has taught me skills that go far beyond the dorm. I’ve learned how to lead without being controlling, how to make fair decisions in the moment, and how to handle stressful situations without losing my composure. Most importantly, I’ve learned how important listening is — understanding someone’s point of view, hearing their concerns, and finding the best way to help. These skills have helped me in school, in sports, and in everyday life.
My goal as a prefect is always the same: to help create a dorm community where everyone feels respected, safe, and supported. I want students to be able to focus on academics, athletics, and personal growth, knowing they live in a positive environment. Leadership at Salisbury is about trust, responsibility, and helping others succeed, and I’m proud to be part of that.
Overall, being a Dorm Prefect has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my time at Salisbury. It has allowed me to grow as a leader, support my peers, and make a real difference in the day-to-day life of the dorm. Every day, I try to lead with integrity and respect while helping build a community where everyone feels they belong.
